St George's Parish History

About Our Parish

A Legacy of Faith in Te Kuiti Since 1915

Our Sacred History

Over a century of faithful service to God and community

The Foundation Years (1915)

In 1915, St George's Parish was established as an independent spiritual community when it separated from Te Awamutu, marking a pivotal moment in Catholic life in Te Kuiti.

The young parish was entrusted to the care of the Mill Hill Fathers, a missionary society known for their dedication to bringing the Gospel to new territories. These devoted priests laid the spiritual foundations that would sustain our community for generations to come.

From its inception, St George's Parish became a beacon of faith in the King Country region, serving as a spiritual home for Catholic families and welcoming all who sought the sacraments and the comfort of Christ's presence.

Faith & Education United

The sacred bond between St George's Parish and St Joseph's School exemplifies our commitment to nurturing both spiritual and academic growth.

In the early days of the parish, St Joseph's School classes were held within the church itself, demonstrating the inseparable connection between faith formation and education in our Catholic tradition.

Today, this historic relationship continues to flourish. The school basement serves as our parish hall, a physical reminder of the enduring partnership between these two pillars of our Catholic community. This shared space hosts parish gatherings, social events, and ministries, keeping alive the spirit of unity that has characterized our parish from the beginning.

Educating minds and nurturing souls since 1915

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."

— Proverbs 22:6

Windows of Divine Light

Our church is graced with magnificent stained glass windows that illuminate our worship space with sacred beauty and spiritual symbolism.

These stunning windows were thoughtfully organized by the late Fr Eamon Kennedy, whose pastoral vision enriched our parish in countless ways. His dedication to enhancing the beauty of our sacred space reflects the Catholic understanding that earthly beauty can lift our hearts to contemplate heavenly realities.

Each window tells a story of faith, depicting scenes from Scripture and the lives of saints. As sunlight filters through the colored glass, it creates a prayerful atmosphere that reminds us of God's transforming grace—just as light transforms these windows, so does God's love transform our hearts.
